It’s not you.Īnd if we *think* about a friend and decide to call or text him/her checking in, we might have the chance to catch up and share some stories or we might find that they needed a friend and you were able to be there for them because you made that decision. But if the thought comes into your mind, you then use rational thinking to see the whole picture, weigh the pros and cons, focus on responding instead of reacting to that thought and make a decision from there, then it’s just a thought. If you think about it and then act on it, then yeah, you’ve become your thoughts. We can *think* about doing or saying something wrong, but it’s the action that follows that determines the result. So they are the initiator of all of our decisions. They come right before we take action or don’t take action. Our thoughts are necessary and are really powerful. Just because we are not our thoughts, doesn’t mean that our thoughts aren’t helpful.

Think about it (no pun intended), we have to make decisions, process emotions, recall and store memories, express our feelings, make sense of our thoughts and for sure there are a million other things that I don’t even know about!īefore I get into why we aren’t our thoughts, I need to make this clear. (although I wish it was!) There is alotttt of grey going on up there all at once. There is so much that goes on in our brains that most of us don’t even know about or we aren’t taught it so there is no way for every little thought to mean something. It might make you feel better if you’re like me!) And a lot of times, we don’t have reasons. And it feels good when it clicks and makes sense, but it can drive us nuts when we can’t make sense of it. It’s natural for us to want to make sense of every little thought that pops into our head. But the truth is, our brains and minds are complex af. I spent so long trying to convince myself that it meant something.
